Burlesque isn’t just about attending an event every few months. Its glamour and aura should be incorporated into everyday life by every fan. We asked some of our troupe how they bring their burlesque personalities into their homes.

KATIE CROSSBONES

I try to theme the rooms in my house, for example I spend a lot of time in the kitchen as I love baking and hosting dinner parties so my kitchen is very typical 1950s, all my bake and cook wear is powder pink, I have matching tea sets often out on display and various Laura Ashley shabby chic accessories such as cake and recipe book stands. It’s really fun and feels like I’m playing in my own little doll house when I’ve got my hair tied up in a chignon and my little vintage styled apron on. However a very simple way I bring burlesque into my home is with mirrors. I tend to look for ones with very ornate frames as they make for a fantastic feature and are perfect for hanging jewellery on. You’ll typically find pearls and cameos draped on mine, along with few pictures of old Hollywood icons pinned up and often little notes written in lipstick.

LACEY DEMURE

My top tip for bringing burlesque into your home…is to do exactly that! If you love beautiful accessories…vintage cases, lovely dresses…then display them as decor. Trying to store bulky frocks and petticoats is a bit of a pain – so keep them in your fashionable luggage, then use this a coffee table, or something to put your feet up on! I use my hats, corsets and jewellery as ornaments. I arrange them on hooks on my bedroom wall – take them down to wear and replace in the morning. They make the place look sparkly and glamorous. And I have them already, so no extra cost to decorate! This always strengthens your argument when buying new shoes… they are also show pieces!

I spend so long on many of my costumes it seems a shame to box them and put them away so I love to display my crystal shoes and headdresses in my living room. They are certainly a talking point! I also have a custom made Vanity Kills mirror on display in my bedroom which attracts a lot of compliments.

Burlesque to me is a mixture of theatrical entertainment and being ‘out and out’ woman (or man of course), with whatever that means for you. For me being ‘out and out’ woman is embracing my sexuality, femininity and also my tomboyish nature too. I think this reflects in my home, especially with my kitchen pole, and also a pole in my spare room from time to time. I also took the executive decision to decide against using the utility room for a boring washing machine and ironing board as a ‘good wife’ should do and instead send my ‘good husband’ down to the launderette, and instead use the room as a dressing space full of my lovely clothes, shoes, bags and jewellery.

My home is very vintage styled from Victoriana to 1970s kitsch. Against red walls are Edwardian show bill posters, an opulent gold framed mirror and a print of our performers by Dale Scott. Lots of semi nude women – in paintings and old sepia photos. Saratoga trunks and suitcases piled high with costumes. A kitsch kitchen painted bright pink, decorated with showgirl music album covers and a big 1970s Lynch picture. Victorian dressing table piled high with perfume bottles, lace, silver frames and music boxes. See here an old article on How to Decorate Your Bedroom Club Noir Style http://www.clubnoir.co.uk/news/decorate-your-bedroom-club-noir-style/#more-2553

ASTRELLA OLDHAM – HEADDRESS MAKER

I couldn’t resist taking a snap of my boudoir shoe display, I think I was encouraged by the thought that others do display their shoes too, and that it isn’t just me who over appreciates their shoes. I can reassure my husband now (who is ever so agreeable and patient) that he is not alone in entertaining his partner’s whimsy.

Club Noir – The Blitz – Clothes Inspiration

We’ve jotted some ideas on what to wear to this event. Hope this gives some inspiration. As always – you certainly don’t need to dress for the theme. Anything goes. This is certainly not an exhaustive list.

There was mainly no difference between young and old. Teenagers hadn’t been invented yet. You basically dressed like your mum or dad.

But in 2013 we can put our own modern twist on things. Feel free to shorten skirts, fetishise or freshen up anything.

Military from all eras. But we ask that German WW2 uniform not be worn as a mark of respect. Mr. Ben in Glasgow has a lot of military clothes that can be bought for a 10% discount if you buy your Blitz ticket from them too.

Camouflage.

Civvy Street – Saratoga Trunk in Glasgow has a lot of clothes from this era that can be hired.

Medical – Nurses. Doctors. Patients. Bandages, blood, crutches, wheelhairs, dressing gowns, pajamas.. Red Cross. See wwww,AnatomicBomb.com for latex nurse uniforms.

Remember this is summer time – so be doubly inspired. Knotted hankies and rolled up trousers for men. Bathing beauties and swimming caps for ladies. Think of Betty Grable peeking over her shoulder in a white bathing suit.

Make do and mend – recycling or upcycling any clothes you have to make something new.

Rationing – the CC41 label (Clothing Control 1941) denoted that these items of clothing were government-approved. Using minimum fabric, decoration, buttons. Yet they were still attractive.

Gas masks and boxes.

Hollywood was rationed too – faux fur was used a lot. Silk was out – synthetic was in. The costume departments did their own “make do and mends” and recycled old costumes.

Allo allo. French resistance. Spies.

WOMEN

British women copied the leading Hollywood glamour girls of the WW2 era – Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable, Ann Sheridan, Jane Russell, Veronica Lake, Dorothy Lamour, Lana Turner.

Elaborate hairdos were in as women felt this was one of the few ways they could be creative with their looks.

If doing Victory Rolls – wind your hair round a slim can eg body spray, then simply slip the can out of the hair. If you find you can’t get the 2 rolls the same size then do a side parting and make 2 decidedly different sized rolls. Still looks nice.

Use lots of decoration in hair – film stars even used brooches and diamond bracelets weaved through

Seamed stockings (brown with a cuban heel). Keep them in a glass jar at the end of the night as WW2 ladies did.

When women didn’t have stockings they would rub cold tea or gravy browning on their legs. And mark a seam on their legs with eyebrow pencil or special paint. Or they could have joined the WRNS, Women’s Royal Naval Service, who continued to issue them in a cunning aid to recruitment.

Ankle socks.

Shoes – wedge heels, Ankle strap shoes. Peep toe shoes. Slingbacks.

Big shoulders – Joan Crawford’s designer was aghast when he saw the size of her shoulders saying she was like Tarzan. He couldn’t cut them off so he just made a big feature of them. And so the 1940s big shoulder craze began.

Tie your blouse in front into a knot.

High waisted trousers.

Long skirts.

Hats, hats, hats – these were never rationed. Hats and veils – veils of all sorts, draped in all ways. Hats with cherries and flowers. Turbans.

Snood. Big bow in back of hair.

Tamoshanters.

Cropped tops.

Billowing see-through robes.

Waistcoats.

Dress clips. Big brooches. Pearls. Bunches of cherries brooch.

Flowers – worn in hair, as corsage, on wrist, at waist.

Voluminous sleeves.

Floral tea dresses.

Shopping basket. Clutch bags.

A-line skirts

Skirt suits were often quite shapeless – think of the Beverley Sisters.

Knits eg Fair Isle/Arran

Vargas

Wartime weddings

Aprons +headscarf

Ruffles/frills/bows at neck.

Pompom size balls on shoes.

Muff

Sparkles, seqins, diamonds

Factory overalls. Here is what Marilyn Monroe said: I wore overalls in the factory. I was surprised that they insisted on this. Putting a girl in overalls is like having her work in tights, particularly if a girl knows how to wear them. As parachute inspector … the men buzzed around me.

Landgirl uniforms

Trench coats

MEN

Men’s shoulders had to broaden to match the female fashion.

Hats allowed indoors even tho u wdnt in those days?

Suits are in. Single or double breasted. All traditional kinds of fabric – tweed, flannel, pin-stripe. And the accessories are what can transform you into a 1940s bloke.

Braces

Walking cane

Man – hanky in pocket.

Ties – Dotty ties. Stripey

Bow tie

All kinds of evening jackets and tuxedoes.

Masculine jewellery- tie pin, cufflinks, wwatch chains, rings.

Bowler hats.

Flatcaps..

Tophats

Straw boater. (Astaire)

Homburg.

Moustache.

Zoot suits.

Flower in lapel even for daytime. Especially a Carnation.

Gloves

Hanky in pocket.

Vest

Tight white tshirt military style

Hair – Short back +sides

Brylcreem

Trilby -front turned up -denotes lower class

Dog tags

High waisted trousers

Trench coats

Sports jacket. Worn with tshirt, open neck shirt; shirt buttoned up to neck, or polo shirt. Or shirt and tie.

Describe yourself in 6 words or less.

Loyal, Dependable (I sound like a well-trained Pooch so far), Vintage Loving Tea Drinker.

I first met you at a 1950s club called All Tore Up that your husband ran and DJd. You were dressed up in your 1950s gear. I didn’t realise then that that’s how you always dress, and from even earlier periods such as the 40s. Even when working at the Cup and Saucer you’re always top to toe in period clothes. Would you agree that’s the case?

Yes, though I’m not a ‘Vintage’ snob I don’t mind well done Retro clothing but refuse to pay obscene amounts of money for a tatty piece of clothing just because it’s ‘Vintage’. I love that in the 40’s & 50’s women dressed as women and could easily make humdrum look sexy, even the plainest dress can be sexy when you add seamed stockings, smiling eyes & a wiggle in your walk.

How long have you been dressing that way?

As you know Tina, Tony & I met as School kids & I used to see him in his Teddy Boy gear, Pink socks, skin tight Drain Pipe trousers and Brothel Creepers and thought phwoar! When he asked me out I began to revamp my wardrobe with more 1950’s style but didn’t really go full on until after we married in 1987. Before that it was all Rah Rah skirts and frizzy perms. The 80’s had a lot to answer for!

What are your favourite clothes to wear? (clothes, accessories, lingerie)

Ooh that’s hard one. It so depends on my mood, where I’m going, the weather and of course what fits! I do love to wear 40’s style trousers teamed with a vintage jumper, my favourite pair of vintage shoes & a full do rag(headscarf). Great for jiving in.

I also love wearing seamed stocking with my 50’s girdle (Miss Mary of Sweden eat your heart out!) under a pretty dress & a flower in my hair. If you feel good you look good.

And your hair and makeup too are always vintage. Does that come easy or did you have to practise to perfect that?

I try but my hair’s very long just now so it’s hard putting it up in pin curls & victory rolls which yes does take some practice. For work I fake it just using hair combs & clipping it back & I’m never without a hair flower or a headscarf. Do rags, be them half or full, are great for bad hair days & I do love a snood. My favourite picture (my facebook cover photo one) is of me wearing a snood with a pretty blue vintage dress.

My makeup I keep simple, always finished with matt powder, cats eyeliner flick & red lipstick.

Where do you obtain your clothes and accessories?

Rockabilly weekenders such as Hemsby, the Rhythm Riot or the Rockabilly Rave are good but can be expensive ALWAYS barter! EvilBay, Facebook and Etsy are ok but I like to see & feel the items, pictures can be deceiving so local shops such as Mr Bens, Circa Vintage & Vintage Guru fit my needs much better. Best advice I can give is if you like it buy it I have so many regrets about beautiful clothes I talked myself out of that I’ll never see again!

Your hubby DJ Sailor Tony is actually a real life sailor! On a submarine! And he dresses in sailor clothes when DJing. How cool is that. Do you find vintage clothes sexy on a man? Would you ever be able to fancy anyone in a fleece and trainers?

Tony does go out in fleece & trainers sometimes lol! Luckily it’s only when he’s going for a run though!

No sorry if a man can’t be bothered to make an effort to look good for YOU let alone himself then YOU are doing something wrong

A man in smart vintage clothing just has an air about him though some wear it better than others and as for a man in Uniform….or should that be out of Uniform ;-D Well what can I say.

You’ve mentioned before that your home is 1940s. Tell me more about that. Does Tony have much say in décor?

Our house is pretty much like the furniture in The Cup & Saucer all ‘pre loved’ with lots of ‘character’ nothing too pristine or pricey the dents & scratches add to the charm. We have 3 fully working 1950’s Radiograms, a 1940’s dining room suite including matching sideboard and a 1940’s 3 piece suite that we have owned for 20 years!

Tony does have a say in the décor as long as he agrees with me! No seriously we have very similar likes & dislikes so it’s always been a collaboration.

The next gig on the Club Noir calendar is a 1940s night called The Blitz. Is that something that inspires you? For dressing up? Otherwise?

Definitely!

Whilst I would not want to have been a part of such a horrendous time in history I love the fact that they not only ‘Made Do’ but went far beyond in an effort to escape the horrors facing them. Tea bags as accessories say it all!

Films based in the war years such as Yanks, Land Girls etc whilst not depicting the horrors show that ‘Live for today, party and be damned spirit’ that kept a lot of people going. Now what am I going to wear mmmm?

Could you give Club Noir fans some cheap or easy tips for dressing World War 2 style?

The high street usually have some pretty 40’s style tea dresses. Team this with some seamed stockings/tights.

Heated rollers or curling tongs are great for the glamorous look. If not sleep in pin curled hair then brush it through before going out, put your victory rolls in or fake it with combs & pop in some flowers. If all else fails wear a headscarf.

Sorry – no fake tans here! & it’s got to be red lipstick. There’s some affordable makeup in Superdrug at the moment from powder to liquid eye liner which I use both called Make Up Academy.

You not only look great. But you’re a domestic goddess as well. All the food and cakes at the Cup and Saucer are made by your own fair hand. What made you decide to open such an establishment?

I’m a feeder, always have been always will be! Having somebody like something I have prepared is the most important thing to me, I used to send Tony off to sea with baking for his lads and always enjoyed the compliments.

When the chance came to open the Cup & Saucer it was a case of right time, right place & seemed like a natural step. Home from home!

I can’t believe how well it’s gone so far and whilst paying the rent is important the nice comments and the lovely people I get to meet give me most satisfaction.

Can you give us any quick or easy tips that could help us on the road to becoming a domestic goddess?

You’ll make sound like Nigella in a bit!

Tony has always said “my Mum always made a shopping list”… I do now!

It saves a lot of time not having to pop back to the shops because I’ve forgotten something!

Work smarter not harder.

In what other ways, if any, do you emulate housewives of yore? I know they were big on home economics, not going over budget, never throwing away a scrap of food, sewing, knitting, etc. Do you partake of any of these types of skills?

I’m a Yorkshire lass so being thrifty is ingrained in me.

Sometimes the best meals are made from leftovers, but if you can afford to, buy the bigger pack, make more & then freeze, it’s more economical & time saving.

I do ‘Make do & Mend’. The blue vintage dress I mentioned earlier had to be altered to fit me. The waist was too high so I chopped off the bottom to make a new middle piece then re-hemmed it, jobs a good un!

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise your fans.

I’m a Rock Chick at heart and love Bon Jovi & Aerosmith. I actually own a pair of Steven Tylers sunglasses that he threw to me when Tony took me to Paris to see Aerosmith!

I also posed naked for a calendar! I struck the famous Marilyn Monroe calendar pose for a very risqué calendar I had done for Tony to take away to sea with him.

SAM – IF THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO TALK ABOUT JUST DO SO.

My most important rule to live by – NEVER HAVE WONKY SEAMS!

If you’re planning on going out for a few ‘sherbets’ never wear seamed stocking, it’s not a sexy look at the end of the night.

DJ Loveless has been our resident DJ, dandy and bon vivant since day 1 of Club Noir. He is also the very gifted photographer of Muse Photography.

Describe yourself in 6 words or less.

Creative, Eclectic, Passionate, Romantic, Vain, Loyal.

How long have you been DJing and how did you get into this?

Around the age of 17/18 spending time between London and Glasgow’s various alternative, fetish and underground clubs a career as a DJ began accidentally due to a large record collection, passion for music and love of nightlife! From DJing smaller Goth clubs originally to underground fetish events and progressing through an array of styles and tastes to finally being resident with the wonderful Club Noir which gives a platform to entertain to such a vast array of people and the music can cover so many styles that it is a true pleasure to DJ.

You have an encyclopaedic knowledge of music. How did you come about this?

Coming from a family who all loved music I was surrounded by it from a very young age. One minute Status Quo then moments later Vivaldi and that was just my father, from other rooms there would be Patsy Cline or Dr Hook from my mother and The Cramps or Echo & the Bunnymen loud and muffled from the closed door of my brothers room and it is my brother I owe credit to a lot of my early musical tastes… and the records I stole from him. My passion for music stayed with me as I worked my way through life not only as a job through DJing and training as a sound engineer but also as a soundtrack to my continuing adventure.

The next gig on the Club Noir calendar is a 1940s night called The Blitz. Is that something that inspires you? Musically? Otherwise?

The Blitz event and 40’s theme is something that not only seems to have captured the public’s attention but also my own and working through the music of the era recently for the show has been a real pleasure. A time of great troubles and sadness across the world but musically there was amazing talent still creating music to capture the time not only in sadness but also happiness to raise the spirits. WWII brought together everyone from different social classes and walks of life in a way never seen before and as such new music was found by each which also lead to new music. Jazz, Blues, Folk, Orchestral, Big Band, Crooners, etc all coming together in popular music without which we wouldn’t have later had rock n roll as we know it which in turn would have altered fashions and trends just showing how important music is to our culture and lives.

You’re always dressed great. Even when I bump into you in the street you’re always dressed great. What inspires you?

Style has always been very important to me though I don’t believe it should be labelled. I have a passion for suits, tuxedo’s being my particular downfall as I own approaching twenty in different styles, cuts and colours. Sadly my favourite men’s outlet Johnsons of London closed a few years back but I still find London to be the best place for inspiration while shopping. Most of my boots come from R.Soles of Kings Road as the quality is outstanding and the name to this day still gives me a giggle. One should dress to please themselves, to make themselves happier in their day but also remember that your outward appearance also affects how others perceive and interact so create the person you want to be and not the one you think you have to be. Much to the confusion of friends and those I work with one day I may be in a western shirt and cowboy boots, the following a rockabilly t-shirt and engineer boots later changing to tailored suit to go for post work drinks… clothes are a wonderful way of making our daily lives more pleasurable and interesting.

Can you dispense some sartorial advice for men?

A quote from an idol of mine Miss Marlene Dietrich sum’s it up with “I am at heart a gentleman” which to me is not only a lovely quote but something to try and live by. Dress well, take pride in your appearance, treat others as you’d like to be treated, compliment that girl/boy you just thought was beautiful (it’ll make their day), enjoy life and strive for what you want out of it and the world shall be a better place for everyone.

Do you know yet what you’ll be wearing to The Blitz? And is there any one thing that you’d like to see the ladies in?

There are a few options currently for this event though there is always the temptation for more shopping! I’m currently swaying towards an original 40’s tailored 3 piece double breasted tuxedo as worn by the musicians and upper classes of the era, a look continued through music and style and seen in various guises from the likes of Bryan Ferry and David Bowie. As for the ladies I’m always stunned by the creativity and style that Noir inspires and look forward to seeing everything from fitted uniforms to seamed stocking clad bombshell’s.

I love your clothes but I ADORE your hair. How on earth did you come by that look?

I’d love to take credit for the hair black and white hair which has been with me in various guises over the years but the inspiration was David Vanian of Damned and Phantom Chords fame as, as one of my teenage idol’s like an alternative Elvis with such original style and music. It’s become such an iconic look for DJ Loveless from the early days of long and backcombed gothic to retro quiff that if I consider changing the look their is an outcry from friends and fans and even though I have been known to try other looks I always end up back to b&w as it seems to be who I am.

I love your photography. They look like they’d be as much of a joy to take as to behold. Is that the case?

My photography is a true passion and artistic outlet for me and that I can make a career from it is a wonderful thing. Collaborating with other creative people to create exciting concepts and images is not only a job but my sanity, every day being different, constantly working with new people and producing work that makes others happy as well as leaving something artistic I’ve created in the world is very important to me. Whether it’s a pin-up shoot for a new client, effects art project, location or studio the need to create something beautiful and enduring is a driving force for me.

You’re a massive film buff and I know it would be impossible for you to narrow down your favourites. But do recommend some films from the World War 2 era that would get us in the mood for The Blitz.

As a huge film buff there are many movies of the war and post war era close to my heart… the first to come to mind being one of my all time favourites A Matter of Life and Death with the incomparable David Niven as a WWII Pilot, It’s a Wonderful Life being Frank Capra’s defining moment as a director with James Stewart in his first role since leaving the army… a wonderful time for Hollywood and cinema and I urge everyone to look out the movies of such icons as Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Clark Cable, etc

Tell us something about yourself that might surprise your fans.

Random DJ Loveless facts: I have a housemate called Mr Fraidy Cat, I restore vintage jukebox’ as a pastime, I’m probably more tattooed than Noir fan’s know, I own a human skull named Uncle Vincent which resides in a glass case within my office, I collect original 40’s and 50’s film/cinema posters and vintage cameras, I also work as a graphic designer and I’m single

WE’RE BACK! The desire … the fantasy … the nightmare. Terrifying.

YOU’RE BACK! The costumes. The attitude. The hedonism.

In the dead of the night, the beasts are unleashed! Femme fatales with blood-stained talons. Evil libertines. The most covetable costumes and beautiful performers at the Fringe year after year – judge for yourself the star quality.

Two burlesque shows starring:

Dracula’s Bride – Deadly Romanian Countess on the hunt for her wedding feast – the blood from a beautiful young man. She undresses for dinner from a regal bridal trousseau encrusted with jewels. Tina Warren.

Bloody Thorns – Chelsea Dagger stripteases from a rose covered ballgown and takes delight from the exquisite pain their thorns cause

Off With His Head – Heartless Lacey Demure takes revenge on a former lover.

Coffin - by DJ Loveless

Marilyn: Back from the Dead – By platinum blonde alternative model Debay Delux.

Rocky Horror – You know the music. You know the moves. Let’s do it. Luke Amour as the sweet transvestite Frank N Furter.

Edwina Scissorhands – Dark Tim Burton fantasy character with a Club Noir twist from Katie Crossbones.

Ballet Blue

Pole Dance – prepare to have your socks knocked off by Tiff Finney

Gimp Prop Lady

I’ve Got You Under My Skin – Stripping, but not as you know it. Vanity Kills is the femme fatale with luscious, raven hair and evil come-hither eyes.

French Maid – Blindingly funny farce from Dastardly D as butler and Tiff Finney as the maid with the cartoon figure. Premiering a new latex design from Anatomic Bomb.

Plus many, many more acts of striptease, dancing, singing, circus and variety.

Those menacing men: DJ Loveless and DJ Poprock play vintage and modern music.
